Literacy

Reading and writing are complex skills. They develop gradually as emergent literacy out of many other developments.

Starting with communication and talking, children learn about their language. Through rhymes and songs, enjoying looking at books and making up stories in their play they begin to understand the sounds of their language and what reading is all about. Mark making, drawing, seeing and understanding print around them and seeing how adults use writing to communicate lays foundation for writing skills.
